Focus and Scope

The TESL Canada Journal is a major venue for publishing in the areas of teaching and learning official languages; second-language teacher education; and the maintenance and development of minority, heritage, or Aboriginal languages. In her introductory message in the first issue of the journal, Laura Ho (then President of the TESL Canada Federation) stressed that “our national identity at home and abroad focuses on the two concepts of Official Bilingualism and Multiculturalism”, emphasizing diverse aspects of “language development” as central to those themes. That core mandate resonated well with our readership and has endured. Initial plans for the journal were set in place at a national meeting of the Board of Directors of the TESL Canada Federation in 1982, based on a proposal by Antoinette Gagné, who at that time was acting editor of the SPEAQ (Société pour la Promotion de l’Enseignement de l’Anglais, Langue seconde, au Québec) Journal. The provincial organizations of British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec agreed to collapse their own publications into a new TESL Canada Journal, and the other provincial organizations likewise agreed to support the new project both morally and financially. From the beginning, the journal has been intended to represent the inseparable scholarly and professional interests of teachers and researchers in the field of English as a Second Language (ESL) across the country, welcoming not only full-length articles dealing with research and theorization, but also book reviews, shorter opinion pieces and surveys, and contributions directed towards critical thought about classroom-teaching strategies. Moreover, on a number of occasions, additional Special Issues of the journal have offered selected conference proceedings or addressed specific thematic topics. The first editor was Susan Parks, of Concordia University. Subsequent editors have continued to be affiliated with various universities across Canada, including Kelleen Toohey (Simon Fraser University), David Mendelsohn and John Archibald (University of Toronto, and OISE), Sheena Gardner and Janet Carroll (University of Winnipeg , and University of Manitoba), Tracey Derwing and Murray Munro (University of Alberta, and Simon Fraser University), Pat Matthews, Rick Berwick and Ernest Hall (University of Manitoba, University of British Columbia, and University of British Columbia), Pat Matthews and Richard Kidd (University of Manitoba), Pat Matthews and Sandie Kouritzin (University of Manitoba), and John Sivell (Brock University). Strong academic leadership has been an ongoing feature of TESL Canada Journal. Intending contributors are encouraged to consult the Advice for Authors for practical information regarding the submission process as well as guidelines for the preparation of four distinct categories of manuscript: Full-Length Articles, Perspectives, In the Classroom, and Reviews.
